Copenhagen Trip report 2021 10 21

Thursday: we drove to Lund for a control visit to the hospital. Yet another “all clear” thank goodness. My throat cancer has not returned. Then we set course for Copenhagen in driving rain and blustery winds. We had hoped to visit Staten’s Museum for kunst however when we parked and entered the building it was clear that it was way too crowded. We had hoped to eat before wandering but there was not a seat to be found in the café, so we drove to our hotel, checked in and found a local bar for lunch. An IPA was consumed with enthusiasm. After a short rest we wandered out into Vesterbro to enjoy the big city buzz. So many eating places, people, cars etc. We need an injection of pace to keep our brains functioning and driving in big cities is a delight. Dinner was in a wine bar where we drank Rioja and consumed Tapas. They had a neat way of measuring your consumption from one or more bottles of wine at your table. More wandering in the busy streets where the downside of cities revealed itself. A young man clutching a wine bottle wandering with a glazed expression and later seen again sitting on a bench. Shopping trollies covered with blankets by a church holding the possessions of the homeless. It induces mixed feelings. Glad it is not me but very sad to see.

Friday: Breakfast in the hotel was buffet and crowded. An elderly woman wandered looking confused with frequent questions to the staff. She took a long time to gather here meagre breakfast whilst her husband sat and consumed his with indifference. It was not a good breakfast.

The National Museum was busy but nevertheless enjoyable. The Viking exhibition was superb with lots of interactive and audio-visual content. Lunch in the restaurant was good and we luckily decided to eat early and avoided the rush. The next stop was the Hovstall. Large white horses in immaculate stables did everything to avoid eye contact. Perhaps they were embarrassed to be caught confined. The display of wagons was also interesting. We wandered back to the hotel via a coffee shop and a very crowded Ströget.

Friday is a busy night for restaurants, so we decided to book by internet. When we arrived at our selected Italian it was full. I had booked by mistake for Saturday. We found a Vietnamese with a vacant table which was excellent. On leaving the table my chair began to fall backwards. With lightning reactions, I saved the chair but stabbed a female diner in the back with my finger. My profuse apologies fell on deaf ears. She was not amused. We decided to make our next stop a rock club. When we arrived, the music was so loud we could not hear the cashier. Did she say 15 or 1500? We decided deafness was not worth any price. We retired instead to Tivoli to join the masses in a crazy Halloween wonderland. We saw pumpkins of every size framed by garish decorations. Screams came from the carousels as children enjoyed self-inflicted terror. It was fun to wander and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells.

Saturday: Breakfast was quieter and better than yesterday; however it was still below par especially the warm dishes. We drove to Fisketorvet to shop for food and clothes. It is very seldom that we find ourselves in a shopping mall but in short takes it is a pleasant experience. On the way back to the bridge we paused at the Bottle Shop to replenish our drinks cabinet and arrived finally in Skillinge with 11 degrees and bright sunlight in stark contrast to Copenhagen’s rain and wind.
